Problems with Car Titles

Many VLN customers are unaware of properly transferring title when a vehicle is sold. This could cause issues. Buyers may encounter the following issues if the title is not transferred:

  • The seller may still owe money on the vehicle (alien), and the bank or other party owing money can try to collect it from the buyer or repossess the vehicle.

  • Only the vehicle's registered owner is eligible for insurance.

  • The buyer will not resell the vehicle if the title has not been legally transferred.

  • The vehicle could be confiscated and sold by the state if the seller has a drinking and driving history.

Seek legal assistance from a car title lawyer at the earliest if you face any of the problems mentioned above.

Sellers, on the other hand, during Lemon Car dealership, may face the following issues if the title is not transferred:

  • If the buyer is involved in an uninsured automobile accident, the seller may be held liable as the "owner" of the vehicle. This can be a highly traumatic and costly process.

  • The government may demand the seller to pay towing and storage fees if the vehicle is detained.

  • The car cannot be registered in the buyer's name if they do not have a valid driver's licence. This can result in the issues mentioned above.

The buyer and seller can transfer the title in the following ways:

  • Filling in the information of the sale in the blanks on the certificate of title form; signing the certificate; and

  • Within ten days after the sale, mail the sale report to DVS.
